The legend of The Four Sons Aymon
-
-
Once upon a time, lived a lord called Aymon. Widower, he raised alone his four sons :
-
Renaud (the eldest), Guichard, Alard and Richard
-
They wanted to become knights so they spent several years at the court of Charlemagne and they became knights. One day, Bertholet, the nephew of the emperor, provoked Renaud while they were playing chess but Renaud, stronger than Bertholet, injuried him deadly.
-
-
To escape the rage of Charlemagne who swore revenge, the four sons Aymon ran away to the dense forests of Ardennes with the extraordinary horse Bayard.
-
Bayard was not an ordinary horse, he was the son of a dragon and a snake and he could jumped above rivers and valleys.
-
In Ardennes, the four sons Aymon met their cousin Maugis, a wizard who swore to protect them, to do this, he transforms the bottom of a mountain in four impassable rocky peaks and he built a castle in order to hide the knights.
-
-
They lived here many years but the vengeful Charlemagne found them and they were obliged to run away to the lord Yon in Gascogne but the emperor found them again and they ran away again.
-
-
After all these years of fight and flight, Charlemagne proposed to the Four Sons Aymon peace in exchange of the pilgrimage of Renaud and the horse Bayard
-
Renaud accepted and went to Jerusalem.
-
The emperor hated the magical horse so he tried to drown him in La Meuse but Bayard survived and hid in the forest.
-
-
Today, we say that we can hear him in the Ardennes forests by the nights without moon, calling for his olds masters.
